Steel Rails

Day Twelve: Europe or bust

Saturday was a day filled with trains, which are - in my opinion - the best mode of transportation possible. There’s nothing better than soaring across steel rails, feeling the train sway beneath you, gazing out the window at the views that fly by. No work, no stress, just you and the here-then-gone display of scenery. In my opinion, every train holds at least a speck of magic, but the one we rode this time was extra special. Our tracks crossed the Glenfinnan (Gleann Fhionnainn) Viaduct - featured in the movie the Sorcerer’s Stone. It was even more beautiful than in the film and all the nice people on the train got to see me fangirling. It was epic.

After visiting the Viaduct and riding the train we spent the day in a little seaside down called Mallaig where dad played his fiddle by the sea, I read Pride and Prejudice and we ate the best fish and chips we’d eaten yet (and at this point we’d eaten a lot of fish and chips).

We took the train back to our apartment and spent a wonderful, warm evening reading aloud, watching Britain’s Got Talent and eating hot sausage rolls.

Overall, it was a relaxing, relatively uneventful day (if you don't count Mom and Dad almost missing the train they were supposed to meet us on or the fact that we had to hike through mud and mire to get a good view of the viaduct). But the experience was worth it all, and I can't wait to see what other wonders Scotland holds for me.
